Nidra Yoga School was established 8 years ago with the sole purpose of offering a residential yoga retreat in Varkala. The ashram property carries the "clear energy" of many years of yoga practice.
The school purposefully not offering open classes or teacher training to maintain the clarity of its vision and create a space for "true relaxation."
The retreat is limited to a maximum of 15 people, often with fewer attendees. Participants are not permitted to use cell phones or computers on the premises to help them disconnect from daily distractions.
You will feel the difference in energy the minute you walk in and we look forward to you having a wonderful, relaxing, and well-deserved yoga vacation.
Over the past 8 years, Nidra Yoga School has cultivated a wonderful, calm, and very natural environment for practicing yoga asanas, pranayama, and meditation in Kerala. The primary goal is to "just BE" at the school. The asana practice is based on Sivananda yoga, presented in a very relaxing and meditative way. Hari spent three years with the Sivananda organization, in California, Canada, and India.
Asanas provide gentle stretching that acts to lubricate the joints, muscles and ligaments, tendons, and other parts of the body. They also help balance inner organs, tone the nervous system, improve circulation, release tension, increase flexibility, provide overall well-being, and most importantly, prepare you for pranayama and meditation.
Practicing asanas regularly will help us to look at our habits and behavior patterns in a more healthy manner. For the yogi of the 21st century, a thorough understanding of complete relaxation is far superior to an overly flexible body.
For Nidra Yoga School, it is important that YOU after spending time with Nidra Yoga School, take home practice you can integrate into your daily life. If you like, Nidra Yoga School can provide you with a recording of the yoga class, which you can listen to and practice at your home.
Hari's teaching clearly reflects his background in Buddhist meditation, as he emphasizes strongly on breathing, and it gives a lot of space for the individual during class. The awareness and calmness he brings to his yoga class is well appreciated by his students.
Prana means breath, respiration, life, and vitality. Ayama means stretch, expansion, length, regulation, restraint, and control. Pranayama is a technique to make the respiratory organs move and expand intentionally, and intensively. It consists of inhalation (puraka), exhalation (rechaka) and retention of breath (kumbaka).
Puraka stimulates the system, rechaka removes stale air and toxins, kumbaka distributes the energy throughout the body. There is external and internal retention.
For the beginner, pranayama should be guided by a qualified teacher. You feel comfortable guiding you and preparing you for your practice in your day-to-day life. The regulated breathing purifies the mind and body and helps the mind to concentrate and prepare for meditation.
Your daily morning pranayama practice is a combination of techniques that are simple and easy to understand, and the retreat makes sure to teach it to you in a step-by-step approach.
Vipassana is an ancient Indian meditation technique meaning 'to see things as they really are'. It was taught by Buddha, Siddhartha Gautama, over 2500 years ago. 'Buddha' means 'awakened one'.
Vipassana is a process of mental purification through self-observation. One focuses on listening to moods as a silent observer and understanding one's true nature and ego to see things objectively.
The highest goal of Vipassana is liberation from mental defilement. Hari learned it at Abhayagiri Monastery, spending a year in the forest as an Anagarika, with an approach that is clear and easy to understand.
